Limestone Students Shine at the 2026 Ontario Skills Competition

Limestone District School Board students showcased their outstanding skills and talent at the 2026 Skills Ontario Competition, held in Toronto on May 4 and 5, 2026.The Skills Ontario Competition offers a unique opportunity for top students from across the province to demonstrate that they are truly the best in their field. Over two and a half days, competitors impress educators, family members, friends, and potential employers through hands-on, real‑world challenges. News From the Tiger’s Den - May 11th to 15th

All of our Tiger Runners competed with resilience and a positive attitude. Top performers in each division are listed below. Minor Atom Girls: Dakota M 32nd Atom Girls: Gwen P 22ndMinor Atom Boys: Lucas M 52nd Atom Boys: Teddy G 43rdBantam Girls: Hannah C 4th, Addison K 22ndBantam Boys: Scyler BThis brings the Road Racing season to an end! We look forward to moving on now to Track & Field. Reminder that Odessa Track and Field Day is on Monday, May 11th. Special thanks to Mrs. Carrier and Ms. Young for coaching the runners to excellent results this season.Both of our Junior Basketball Teams competed in the LESAA Junior tournament on Thursday. Each team won two out of their three games. The teams demonstrated excellent improvement over the season. We are very proud of how they represented our school at the tournament. Special thanks to Mrs. Watkins and Mr. Legge for coaching the teams.We were excited to host our "Welcome to Kindergarten" event on Wednesday evening. It was a great success and we had over thirty new Junior Kindergartens come to visit the school in preparation to start in the Fall. Families had the opportunity to see both Kindergarten rooms, as well as attend a presentation done by myself and Mrs. Bush. We are looking forward to welcoming them to the Tiger Team next year!On Friday, we had our May Success Assembly. We celebrated the success of our Junior Basketball Team, the Road Race Team. There were a number of "Tigers in the Spotlight" this month. The purpose of this visit is to see Mathematics in the Grade 3 to 6 classrooms, as well as hear from the leadership team about the Math journey at Odessa. We are looking forward to showcasing the hard work that the Odessa Team has been doing to support ongoing growth in Math fluency for our students.Junkyard Jonny visited Odessa last week. The presentation was very energetic and interactive. It engaged all of our students from Kindergarten to Grade 6. The students left the gym smiling and laughing after a solid hour of enjoying Jonny's musical entertainment. News From the Tiger’s Den - April 27th to May 1st

Dear Tiger Families, <img src="/images/e80895e6-63b1-40ba-9e25-dca5a744505e?fingerprint=ppb20260422134154" alt="2026April24" width="294" height="392" style="width:294px;height:392px;display:inline-block;float:right">We are welcoming Junk Yard Jonny to the school to perform this on Wednesday this week. This presentation has been generously sponsored by a grant from the Cataraqui-Kingston Rotary Club. It is our goal this Spring to provide a variety of different musical experiences for our students this Spring. The Limestone Learning Foundation has also invested in musical instruments for schools and we were lucky to acquire a class set of glockenspiels. Mr. Schneider's class has learned to play "Row Row Row Your Boat" and "Happy Birthday" on the Glockenspiels over the last few weeks. I have enjoyed hearing their progress!There are over thirty Odessa Tigers who will be participating in the Bayridge Road Race on Tuesdsay. This dedicated group of athletes has been training at least three times a week since March Break. We are excited for them to have the opportunity to represent our school at the race this week. GO TIGERS GO!Beginning the first of May, all of our Grade 1 and 2 students will be participating in the Odessa Marathon Club. The students will spend 15 minutes each day running or walking on our soccer field at the back of the school. Teachers will be tracking the number of kilometres students complete during this daily physical activity. Our hope is that some of the students will complete a half marathon over the course of the month. At the end of May, the older students on the Running Club will organize a fun "Mini Cub" run for the Grade 1 and 2 students and we will celebrate all of the kilometres that they have run over the month. Upcoming Family Engagement and Climate Survey

The Limestone District School Board is inviting families to take part in the Family Engagement and Climate Survey. This survey gives families an opportunity to share their experiences with their student’s school and with the school board.The feedback helps us understand what is working well and where we can improve. It also supports schools and school councils in building welcoming, safe, and supportive school communities.The survey includes questions about:<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">How schools communicate and share information</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">Whether families feel welcome, included, and connected</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">Barriers to taking part in school activities, such as time, childcare, language, accessibility, or cost</li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem">Safety and bullying, including reporting and follow‑up</li><li value="5" class="editor-listitem">Licensed Before and After School Programs, including questions to help inform future planning</li><li value="6" class="editor-listitem">Some questions ask about family background to help us better understand different experiences across our communities</li></ul>Participation is voluntary and anonymous. News From the Tiger’s Den - April 20th to 24th

Dear Tiger Families, <img src="/images/5012a1e6-d499-4478-b557-d3d163e65bed?fingerprint=ppb20260415151833" alt="2026April18" width="307" height="409" style="width:307px;height:409px;display:inline-block;float:right">A HUGE thank you to the OPS School Council and the staff from Gould Lake Education Centre for putting on a FANTASTIC Nature Night last Tuesday evening. Students and their families had the opportunity to plant seeds, make their own trail mix, try archery, experiment with bucket drums and explore furs from Gould Lake.We are very excited to announce that we were the recipient of a generous grant from the Rotary Club to provide some musical opportunities for the students at Odessa. Junkyard Jonny will be performing at Odessa on April 29th. It is a fanatically fun hour of comedy, drumming, circus arts and plenty of awesome audience participation. Students will have a ball jamming on junk, dancing along with Jonny's crazy antics and learning about the ins and outs of recycling. Our second presentation that is being funded by the Rotary Club is Fana Soro, on Thursday, May 13th. Fana Soro welcome’s us to the percussion music, dance, and wise messages of the Senoufo people from the Ivory Coast. Students will learn about the continent of Africa, their instruments and the love that Senoufo people have for their community. Fana will introduce Balafon and djembe drum rhythms, dance moves, and traditional songs in this highly interactive performance. Message from the Director

Dear Families,As we enter the spring season and final third of the school year, we are reminded of this season’s promise of renewal and growth, and the key role schools and families have together in supporting student learning and well-being. This time of <a href="about:blank" class="editor-link">year</a> brings many opportunities for learning both inside and outside of the classroom, along with the return of outdoor extracurricular activities. While this week has been very wet and rainy, the warmer temperatures of spring are upon us.  I would like to take this opportunity to share a few important updates with you:P.A. Day – Friday, April 17A reminder to families that tomorrow, Friday, April 17, is a P.A. Day. There will be no classes for students, and we look forward to welcoming them back to school on Monday.Family Engagement and Climate Survey – Coming in MayIn early May, Limestone will be inviting families to take part in a Family Engagement and Climate Survey. The optional survey is anonymous, and families can choose which questions they want to answer.The survey asks about topics such as feeling connected to school, family involvement, safety and bullying, communication, before- and after-school programming, and how technology like artificial intelligence is used in schools.The feedback shared through this survey helps schools and the school board understand what is working well, what could improve, and what may make it harder for some families to take part. Reviewing and analyzing this information helps support safe, welcoming, and inclusive school environments and supports the board’s obligations under the Ontario Human Rights Code. The findings support planning and decision-making that promotes equity, well being, and student success across Limestone schools. News From the Tiger’s Den - April 13th to 17th

There was lots to celebrate this month. Mrs. Dafoe and Mrs. Grant's Kindergarten classroom performed a song that they had been learning in music class with Mrs. Bush. They enjoyed shaking their egg shakers to the music and by the end of the song the audience was clapping and singing along. Ella D., Ronzy E., and Grace R. were celebrated with Sunshine Awards. This group of students took it upon themselves to clean up our school yard when the snow melted. We are very proud of their environmental stewardship. There were a record number of "Tigers in the Spotlight" this month. Stripes was thrilled to celebrate 15 students with the award this month. These students were nominated by school staff because of their work ethic, goal setting, empathy and/or their determination to do hard things even when they think no one is watching. Principal’s Report-Have been holding success assembly each month, kids are really understanding our school’s goals around literacy, wellbeing and math-We were aiming to get 50% of kids to at or above reading- currently at the mid point we are 43% at or above their required reading level. This is 18 kids moving up in their reading level/fluency.- We are meeting with all teachers and giving them a chance to dig into the data and create support/challenge plans for kids who are doing well, and create progress plans to support those who are approaching or below their reading level. This will help us reach our goal of 50%.-Math – working on number fluency. Targeting 15 mins of daily number fluency for all classes. Supporting kids to be good problem solvers and good understanding of numbers. Educators are learning new strategies to build knowledge and skills and understanding of math.-PA day in April will focus on mathematics.- Bingo and games at lunch has ended for grades 3-6. Bingo will be run for grade 2 kids starting this month. -Road race starts soon, Races are end of April and in May. Students will get a prize for running 10km.-Basketball girls has started, boys tryouts are this week.Indigo grant was entirely spent- almost $11,000 worth of books for classrooms and the library.-Stripes is the new name of our tiger mascot-Sounds abound- new music resources like xylophones have come to the school. 3. News From the Tiger’s Den - April 6th to 10th

With this increased outdoor activity, it's important to be mindful of ticks, which can be found in grassy areas like our playground. We kindly remind you to perform tick checks on your children each night to help keep everyone safe and healthy.We have collected more lost and found items over the last few weeks. We will be donating any remaining winter items including hats and mitts this Friday if they have not been claimed. We are very excited about the Nature Night that the School Council is hosting on April 14th. This is a great opportunity to come out to the school for some free activities and treats. Following the tutorial, shooters will be given ample opportunity to hone their skills through a series of instructor led shooting rounds. This enjoyable hour-long experience will allow participants to challenge themselves and strive for a personal best or choose to have friendly competitions with friends and family all while getting a sample of what the amazing sport of archery can offer. News From the Tiger’s Den - March 30th to April 3rd

Dear Tiger Families, <img src="/images/6cd7d44d-7441-4d82-9194-1388c04d5886?fingerprint=ppb20260327013938" alt="2026April4" width="288" height="384" style="width:288px;height:384px;display:inline-block;float:right">We had a busy week at Odessa Public school. The Grade 1 and 1/2 classes had Ruthie's Reading Room in for a workshop. The Road Running Team started practsing, the basketball teams are starting to practise and the Grade 2 students got the opportunity to have BINGO at recess time. All of these different activities increase the sense of belonging students feel at school.The School Council also met this week and is preparing for Nature Night at Odessa on April 14th from 5 pm to 7pm. Please watch for more information on this event coming out later today. Gould Lake will be providing some workshops, there will be a planting station and a make your own trail mix station. The Council receiving a Parents Reaching Out (PRO) Grant to support this event. There will be a Microsoft Form that will be sent out later today that will ask families to indicate if they will be attending. Please fill in this form as it will help us to ensure that we have the right amount of materials and treats available. We are looking forward to seeing you at Nature Night!Remember to check School Day regularly at this time of year as we begin to plan for end of year trips.
